As winter rolls around, excitement fills the air as many are thrilled for the holidays. Whether it be making their wish lists, the surprise when you find out what’s in that shiny red and green box under the tree or finding out your Spotify wrapped. At the end of the year, teens and adults alike are buzzing about their Spotify Wrapped wondering what it will reveal about their listening habits throughout the year.
Spotify wrapped is a concept that originally started as a marketing campaign created by Spotify in 2016, however it quickly blew up, becoming something that people look forward to each year. At the end of the year, Spotify releases information about user’s listening patterns for the past year, which includes top artists, songs, genres and the amount of minutes a person listened to Spotify that year. This year, it even assigned a “listening personality” to each user based on the year’s soundtrack.
The idea is appealing because it’s like a little surprise gift, and while you may have an idea of what’s inside, you don’t really know for sure until you open it, causing excitement worldwide.
While most people post theirs on social media, the staff of The Trojan Voice thought it would be fun to share some of our Wrapped Lists with you.
Our staff seems to love listening to music, as around 34% had listened to Spotify for more than 50,000 minutes in 2023, that’s over one month of listening non-stop. However, there were a few staff members who didn’t seem to be big on music and listened for less than 10,000 minutes, about 27 minutes each day.
Most of the time logged on Spotify was spent listening to their favorite artst, as over half of The Trojan Voice staff were within the top 1% of listeners for their top artist. Our staff seemed to really like one artist in particular, Taylor Swift. Swift showed up in people’s top five artists a total of ten times throughout those surveyed, that’s more than any other artist did. Other recurring artists between the staff were Kanye West, Tyler, the Creator, Travis Scott, Juice WRLD and Olivia Rodrigo.
There were other artists that rose to the top of the most popular singles lists such as Lana Del Rey and Drake. But while those artists appeared a lot, that doesn’t mean that the previously mentioned top artists didn’t. Artists like Taylor Swift appeared with songs like “The Archer” and “illicit affairs,” as well as Olivia Rodrigo with songs like “bad idea right” and “jealousy, jealousy.” Kanye West were hits among those surveyed with songs such as “Flashing Lights” and “Ghost Town.”
A common musical thread also appeared throughout the survey; the most popular genre 36% listened to was rap, closely followed by pop music. It will be interesting to see how musical tastes change in 2024 and we are excited that Spotify will be there keeping track for us.
